A Glimpse into the Inner Glow Skin Care Creation

Picture6DJ2013

Earlier this month I had great pleasure of interviewing one of Chattanooga’s successful licensed aesthetician’s, Dorothea C. Johnson, owner of Inner Glow Skin Care Service, and through our informal meeting she gave me a glimpse of how she turned her skills into her passion for helping individuals conquer their skin ailments, and she elaborated upon the current growth of the aesthetic industry.

Following her passion in the growing field of aesthetics, Dorothea C. Johnson, licensed aesthetician reminscenced when she left her job after working 12 years as an Acquisition Analyst at Unum Provident in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was afraid to leave her full-time job, so she continued working at Unum while attending school at night for 2 years. Dorothea was also working as a part-time make-up artist at Fashion Fair Cosmetics. Encouraging words from Dorothea’s customers helped engage her thoughts for her affinity of having a healing touch for aesthetics lead to a career search and the enrollment in the aesthetics program. Also, under the prompting of Dorothea’s hairstylist she felt compelled to share her God-giving gifts of healing through physical touch to help individuals, create authentic community within her profession, and opened a rental space at Heavenly Styles Salon and Day Spa leading her forward to pursue her dreams. Dorothea explained how her bachelors of science degree in advertising, with a double minor in psychology and speech communication has been put to good use within the field of aesthetics.

How did you come about choosing the career aesthetics, and for how long have you been practicing?
My hairstylist, Debbie Newsom and her business partner, Veronica Bradford at Heavenly Styles Salon and Day Spa encouraged and offered me a chance to work at their establishment and use their massage therapist room for aesthetic services. I worked at Heavenly Styles Salon and Day Spa for 3 years, and because they down-sized, because I no longer had a place to perform my aesthetic services. I received approximately 5 calls in 1 week to perform aesthetic services, but I didn’t have a place to perform them. I started working as an aesthetician at a hair salon on Brainerd Road called Glitz. Then, I decided to go back to aesthetic school to become a teacher. I received my junior instructor license at Miller Motte.

It was at this time Dorothea’s sister informed her about an extra room to work her aesthetic services at The Health Nut alongside owner, Joyce Holt, a nurse practitioner of 23 years through her sister’s business affiliation network. In addition to working at the Health Nut, Dorothea worked as an account representative for Lindsey Skin Care Supply were she trained and informed students of the use of C. A. Botana Skin Care Product line. Cass Gardens Salon and Day Spa was one account that loved C.A. Botana product line and hired Dorothea where she worked as an aesthetician for one year. She then received a call from Virginia College to be a junior instructor, and while in the process of teaching she found a new location to do her facial business at Four Seasons Wellness.

Dorothea taught school for 2 years and was laid off by Virginia College, and currently has been working in this location 4 years. Dorothea further states, “After being in business for 7-years, that she loves the business. God creates us all to serve, and we are vessels used to serve God’s people.” Dorothea seems wise beyond her years further stating, “the power of touch should not be mistaken.”

How do you feel about the growth of aesthetics, and natural cosmetic care industry?

The growth of aesthetics is booming, and nurses and doctors are seeing the money that can be made in aesthetics. The industry is not only growing as it has in the pass, but aesthetics is used as an add-on services. The Tennessee State Board states “aesthetics is looked upon as a professional, more so than a trade. This is why aestheticians can work in doctor’s offices.” Research from the International Dermal Institute stated that seventy percent of individuals will not stay in the field of aesthetics, because they will not allow themselves a chance to build their business. Many individuals simply do not have a plan in place to grow or anyone to help them in the industry. Dawn Ventruss, my mentor has always been a positive light for me for over 12 years. I could not have made it without the Lord and a strong mentor.

What are the types of techniques that you perform the most as an aesthetician?
The type of technique that I would say that I perform the most is my signature 1- hour Heavenly Facials. The facial consist of a cleansing, toning, exfoliation and a mask. Aromatherapy and reflexology are also added to the facial. In the fall and winter, I do a lot of glycolic and lactic acid peels, and the sugar and salt scrub business also increases in the winter months due to those clients who have dry and itchy skin. Please refer to www.innerglowskincare.com to view other services available.

What are some of the most problematic skin issues that you see from your customers?

Some of the problematic skin issues that I see are: acne, acne scars, hormonal and middle aged skin issues; however, aging skin and sun damage skin are also an issue.

What are some of the basic hygienic upkeep one can do to keep their skin supple and clear of issues between aesthetic visits?

SKIN TIPS:

A.) Thoroughly cleanse your face and neck in the morning and in the evening
B.) Use a toner on your face following a cleanser to balance out your skin’s pH (Potential Hydrogen)
C.) Gently exfoliate your skin once or twice a week
D.) Apply a good moisturizer and/or night cream daily
These are the main things that can be implemented for almost any skin type and with any skin care products.

What are your hours of operation and where are you located?
I work by appointment.
My business can be found at: Inner Glow Skin Care Services located inside of Four Seasons Wellness, 6237 Vance Road, Suite 4, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37421 on the back side of Nutrition World on Lee Hwy. Phone: (423) 290-5023. I can always be found doing demonstrations at Nutrition World working as a contractor for supplemental companies.

Dorothea C. Johnson licensed aesthetician also comments on three important points of view regarding
entrepreneurial-ship, and going into business.
1.) Pay off ALL your bills before you start a new business.
2.) Give yourself enough time to build a successful business
3.) Always stay on top of the knowledge in your field.

Is the commodity that makes your life tick running out?

Bushel of Elderberries

Time…..

It’s this one thing..On some nights that I’ve noticed just as soon as darkness of midnight comes, then I hear the singing crickets or chirping birds, and before I realize an eyota worth of sleep or much needed restful slumber, then the dawn’s sunbeams are softly piercing at the crack of my eyelashes.   But, I have nothing but gratitude to always be grateful to be amongst the living, no matter how much delirium I experience throughout my precious days.  There is always something more to do regarding the precious commodity of time within our 24 hour days.  Our schedules have been skewed towards a state of acceleration with the world’s constant accessibility to our lives.  The drive that pervades us towards more excellence has orbited way out of  control, and has greatly tipped the scales between our personal and business lives.

It was one day recently that my imbalances almost tipped my scales over, and then the notion hit me to go along with life walking in prayer; although, I was determined to be diligent, persevere, and continue my goals regardless of  what situation arose, be it,  a broke down car , financial issues, health issues, or inability to meet someone for an appointment, my determination was always there, but having an idea of not doing these tasks solely alone within my own strength, never dawn upon, until I had to rely solely upon God’s strength.  This journey  lead me to my faithfully believe…be cool and roll with it,  be diligent about being at one with God, and not knowing the outcome for every situation.  Learn to be ok with relinquishing a certain amount of control in times of uncertainty.  Stay close at the breast plate of God’s word to help guide my path.  In these days, especially, there are always lessons to be learned about the proclamation of taking great liberties over one’s physical and spiritual health, having the blessing that is garnished within the ashes of tribulations, and in its return creates great beauty, and that is the consolation that God’s word has given me.

These unforeseen occurrences made me rely more on my creator,  more accepting of the openness of friends, the ability to embrace my vulnerabilities, transit on rural transportation, and learn to be content in the mist of the chaos.  My financial reserves were low, and reality hit that I didn’t even have a working vehicle to resort to the most mundane experiences such as collecting loose change from the bottom of my car’s dashboard or washing and waxing my car.  I’ve  had that kind of feeling for my vehicles, but believe me these lean experiences are ones that I have no shame in admitting, they are ones that I believe mold and fortify great character.  Learning to exist with your God-given pace, and the ability to soothe your soul during the times of your wilderness will go a long way to help revitalize and rebound from your illnesses; some good habit forming tasks could be, spending time  listening to music, craft-making, drawing and/or painting, absorbing scenic views on driving excursions, reading a great book, learning to play an instrument or just being silent and at one with yourself with a cup of tea.  A cup of herbal essence was always nice in my household to help set the tone of rejuvenation and revitalizing you for the next day.

Add a cup of herbal essence to increase your rejuvenation to help ease your anxiety and create an atmosphere of slowing down time.

Detox-a-cup is always nice!

  • 1-quart of boiling spring water
  • 1-tsp (teaspoonful) dried Dandelion (liver cleanser/kidney) *
  • 1-tsp (teaspoonful) dried Yellow dock (integumentary/skin cleanser)
  • 1-tsp (teaspoonful) of Milk thistle (liver/gall bladder cleanser)
  • 2-Tbsp (tablespoonful) of Pau d’ Arco (blood-builder and purifier from Peruvian jungle).
  • 1-tsp Licorice (bitter/sweet purifies the liver)
*Caution for those who uses medications that acts as a diuretic. Dandelion is a natural diuretic, and is wonderful as a hair rinse. These herbs help increase circulation.

Are you trying to get over the sniffles or horrible sinus drainage?  I have noticed that most people I’ve encountered, even my chiropractor had a case of the sniffle attacks.  Not good when doing body work on a customers for sure!  But here’s a sure fire way of helping your bod overcome what ails you.

  • 1-quart of spring water
  • 1-tsp (teaspoonful) of dried Elderberries
  • 1-tsp of dried Elderflowers flowers**
  • 1-tsp of dried Plantain leaves
  • 1-tsp of dried Mullein (cooling herb; acts as a lubricant for the lungs and expels phlegm from the lungs and relieve excessive coughing)
  • 1-tsp of dried Yarrow root

**Add the concoction only AFTER you removed the pot of a from the heat source, the chemical constituent in Elderflowers is violate and will dissipate if boiled.)

Wanna know how to acclimate your immune system, so going from one season to the next doesn’t affect you?

Do you want to know how to combat the attacks from ragweed, and other particulate?

How about introducing yourself to ragweed, but…gently!

I love buying local, but it really comes in handy to know who your local farmers are, particularly when you need honey.

  • 1-tsp of dried German Chamomile flowers*
  • 1-tsp of  local honey

Just before the fall season begins, make you a cup of herbal Chamomile tea in one approximately 16 oz of boiling water, but

  1. Be careful not to boil the Chamomile, just place about 1-tsp of dried Chamomile flowers in the hot water, cover, and
  2. steep for 5-10 minutes.

The dried Chamomile flowers will be like an inoculation for your immune system within your body and become acclimated to ragweed, but if you exposing and introducing yourself to the pollen and offending culprit, this will cause your body to produce an inflammatory chemical, histamine, and if your body does not create enough antihistamine to block the irritation, then this is why you experience, yet another allergic reaction.  But if you proceed with gentleness, and take the proper protocols to encourage your body’s natural filtering processes; instead, of masting the symptoms, then you will eventually become acclimated to the seasons new chaotic lashing particulates.

Natural Immune Boosters!

  • Goldenseal, Hydrastis canadensis works well alternatively with Echinacea, it is one of my favorite herbs to use when boosting my immune system, good for the respiratory and lymphatic systems, and gastrointestinal systems, but is so strong that it should definitely not be used for prolong periods.

Those who are pregnant, nursing, and have high blood pressure should not consume this herb.  Goldenseal chemical constituents has drying attributes, that has a tendency to dry up mucous membranes of excess phlegm

  • Stinging Nettles, Urtica diocia its called stinging nettles because on the edges of the leaves its small prickly like needle type of shapes.  It acts as a powerful antihistamine which is good for the immune system, respiratory, inflammatory issues, kidney issues, has been studied that it is good for arthritic issues, allergic reactions, and hay fever.  Stinging Nettles is high in many vitamins, particularly iron.  It is good to consume a couple of weeks before the season begins.  It also can be used as a beautiful hair rinse, great for those, particularly with dark tresses or locks.

Next year when the season comes around you shouldn’t have not ONE sinus issue!

Do you need a natural antibiotic?   Try taking raw garlic.

Would you like to try a high vitamin C rich herbal concoction?

7338252678_e6a18d2e41

Dried herb

3 Tbspful of Hibiscus Flowers or Sorrel (High in vitamin C)

3 Tbsp – Mullein (helps clear mucous build-up in the lungs)

3 Tbsp of Yarrow,(a diaphoretic herb (induce perspiration), research shows to clear up congestion of cold, flu, and other respiratory infection; clears up toxins, and heat)

3 Tbsp of Plaintain,

1 Tbsp of Elderberries (it has been said that this the most effective herb for preventing upper respiratory issues, boosting the immune system with the active component (Sambucus nigra agglutinins), decreases nasal congestion, successful in helping bronchial issues, and alleviating nasal passages.

You don’t have the patient for a long recipe list of herbal remedies, then

~Try,

1- Quart of boiling alkaline water (spring water),

Add the 1 -Tbsp of Chamomile (Only for those who are NOT allergic to ragweeds),

1 Tbsp of Elder Flowers (Only AFTER you removed the pot of a from the heat source)

Do you have a problem with a hacking cough or you can’t stop coughing?

First off, go get check out with a alternative and/or conventional practitioner, before adding or changing a regimen.

For Adults Try a few drops of Cod Liver oil (they are many wonderful brands out there) I use a Tablespoon (Tbsp) of juice, and down the hatch!

The remedy varies with children (this often depends on the body weight of the child), so inform your pediatric physician of what you would like for your child to consume on a daily basis before beginning any new remedy.

Watch out!  I originally wrote this piece at the beginning of  fall and school was beginning session, so between season’s changing and hectic school schedules here are some different ways to  revitalize with botanicals.  Believe it or not the atmospheric conditions since Hurricane Sandy has caused many extreme difficulties amongst people’s breathing patterns to say the least.

Create your own salt bath.

  • 2C of Dead sea salts
  • 1 C of Himalaya salts
  • 2 Tbsp (Tablespoonful) of dried Lemon Balm leaves
  • 5 drops of Lemon verbena essential oil
  • Carrier oil Camellia tea seed oil, or Grapeseed oil (less expensive)

Lemon verbena, herb of grace is good for rejuvenating the mind, (calms, sedates, counters stress), physical, (eases muscular aches and pain, ability to expel kidney stones, acts as an antispasmodic, and can be used in cooking, and as a digestive stimulate),it can be used to heighten your spiritual wellbeing (heighten euphoric essential oil).  Bath salts can be used as a sea salt exfoliant or as a bath/muscle soak.

Do you need time to refresh? revitalize or rejuvenate?

At what expense do you allow technology, power drinks (all-natural or not), chocolate (Godiva or not), caffeine to keep you going?

How much time do you truly rest?  Do you believe in resting your mind, body and soul?

  • What do you do to revitalize, restore, rejuvenate, or recover from your daily meetings with yourself at the door?
  • Do you realize the early signs of being overstressed?

Take a Commercial Break!

Have you notice advertisement agencies are poking fun of us humans becoming too accessible? The popular vehicle commercial has four guys going through, mountains, valleys, turns, and wooded hilly areas, stopping and starting their vehicles constantly checking to see if they are out of bound from their phone coverage.

Then…walla! Once they found a spot without coverage; they then unpack their vehicle and tented up.

Very Interesting! Ayah!

Recapped Weekend Notes:  Relaxation Station

The brilliant sun beams shined down upon us in East Tennessee’s pastures this weekend with above average temps for the month of January spring-like ( month of Reflection), February (month of Balance), and now March (Vitality), while for at least two weekends prior Tennesseans experienced unusual rain, rain, and more rain leaving picturesque cloud formations capping our great ridges.  Then, we experienced yet another hit of unprecedented tornadoes, and grand clean ups.  While observing the precepts and habits of many people in their pleasure taking mode and after-storm life evaluation; mainly, recapping due to the unusually warm weather, torrential rains and hail, I noticed the need to refresh (emotionally, spiritually, and/or physically) or to obtain restoration.  The forms of taking restorative measures come in many variations.  Many individuals have adapted towards therapeutic efforts such as: aromatherapy, drinking herbal teas and juices, prayer, creating authentic community, walking or various forms of exercises (hiking, yoga, pilates, P90Xers, Montenegro Method, Zumba, Insanity, canoeing, swimming, dancing), and painting, drawing, listening to music, et cetera.

The observation brings me to ask a pertinent question, “Why do we rip-and-run or stay on the go?”  Is it, because we live in what I call, “Living the 21st century’s accessible lifestyle”, and when we live  life in this way, then it makes for a drained dismal existence, creating fatigue, lacking true perspective for self-analysis, creativity, and exploration.  In this state of fervent “being-on-the-go”,  constantly re-evaluating our efforts to make good choices and lacking self-confidence, we lose our balance of what life’s essence should be about in the first place.  With America’s constant  yearning to strive to stay on top and globalize we would all  like to consider our country with an A+ (S & P – Standard & Poor’s) credit ratings and with increase educational competitiveness, and with exponential growth from one day exceeding into the next, and living in the age where technology out-grows itself day-to-day the reality of living over-scheduled lives makes for an imbalanced lifestyle and overstressed individuals.

Take a moment of quiet time!

What do you do to revitalize, rejuvenate, refresh, or just plain and simple…be you?

Having such accessibility should sit in the back seat regarding improving your well-being and taking care of your body.  I listened to a sermon of how to live life intentional and with a peaceful life through God’s  restorative spirit  in the place of worship. It was said that they are only three main things that individuals want: joy, peace, and contentment or a justification (purpose) for their life’s existence.

Amasai Fermented Dairy Drink

If you have ever over eaten and your parent told you to take bitters or apple cider vinegar to help digest your foods, then you are somewhat aware of how our digestive system works.  And by the same token if you have ever waited too long to eat, and have taken sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, then you know that this was used as an anti-acid, heartburn reliever, alleviating gaseous molecules, because you missed a meal, but the stomach’s gastric acid should be 100,000 times acidic than water, and these anti-acids can cause havoc on our body’s system if not attended appropriately to.

Eating fermented foods is one way of introducing a normalization to your stomach’s system.   It is the fermentation of our drinks and condiments (hot sauce, marinara sauce, tzatziki sauce, yogurt, salsa, hoisin, tartar sauce, fish sauce, Korean kimchee, sauerkraut, horseradish), that helps us to break-down our foods, and when we cannot break-down our foods they become allergens swimming as undigestible molecules that causes issues.  Amasai is a  dairy drink has been produced by old world methods keeping the dairy temperature under 101 degrees; thereby creating a product where lactose in the presence of fermentation can break down more easily.  This product is similar to kefir types of drinks which are high in vitamins, over 30 probiotics, omega 3 fatty acids, and digestible proteins.

Keeping our priorities Straight!

Your Spirit, Mind and Body needs to be a pristine working machine!  If one component falls out of alignment they all will eventually will fall.  Honor your ability to maintain your inner self.  Taken up any new hobbies anyone?!?!?

My father coins living in the fast lane and dwelling upon your inadequacies as, “re-living our daily struggles over and over”,  or “living on the edge”, and he and my mother greatly understands that rushing to-and fro everywhere is not truly how to live life.  My parents always stated, “if you take care of your body when you’re young, than you don’t have to worry when you get older” .  They are  living testaments that this is a TRUE statement.  You can overcome ALL unorganized or imbalanced lifestyles with the proper changes!  Even my mother and father having various professions (nursing profession, fine and commercial artist, licensed pilot, and road engineer) throughout their years, and this didn’t keep them from settling down and taking proper life breaks.

Welcome – A Letter About My Aunt Michelle

If you want a remedy for almost anything that ails you….

Ask Aunt Michelle

In this day and age people do not think of using home remedies; unless, it is a last result or if they use them any at all.  But from my great-grandmother Ruth’s generation sometimes using the creation of herbal remedies is all they had to depend on for what ailed them.  My Aunt and her siblings all are gifted and have knowledge of herbology, and therapeutic remedies, but Aunt Michelle studied extensively.  Since my Aunt Michelle is so gifted with creating therapeutic herbal remedies for just about anything that ails you, it is quite apparent that this knowledge was passed down to her.

My sister and I grew up spending our summer vacations with my Grandpa and Grammie.  My sister and I were always experiencing some of Grammie’s latest concoctions due to having kindred spirits that lead us to do great exploratory outdoor adventures on my grandparents acreage.  Grammie was always creating therapeutic herbal teas, tonics, gargles, and other cure-all that helped us stay on top of things.  As I grew up I became more aware of just how extensive Grammie’s diligent knowledge was to help our immediate and extended family stay well.  Family members call my Grammie for many a remedy for one ailment or another.  Witnessing the success of these helpful remedies and there remarkable results enlightened me how powerful these remedies are, and I began to have great respect for their therapeutic uses.  One particular incident happened that proved to me the amount of knowledge that my Grammie had was when, Grammie had a stethoscope and took my Grandfather’s blood pressure.  I exclaimed, “Grammie, you’re a doctor!”  she responded, “No, no I am not a doctor”, I said, “Yes, Grammie you ARE a doctor!” But she confirmed in an assuring voice who she was, but to me she has always been one of the wisest persons that I know.

Healthy Blessings,

Keisha
